I am pleased to welcome the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular and New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) to Portland as our communities celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Portland and Oregon boast a number of exceptional attractions in the Chinese tradition. In addition to the Portland Classical Garden, a Suzhou-style landscape honoring our sister city relationship with the ancient city of Suzhou, Oregon has an unparalleled national historic site at the Kam Wah Chung & Co. Museum near John Day. This 140 year old museum is a rare glimpse into the culture and life of the Chinese overseas community in the early days after Oregon statehood in 1859. A restoration championed by Oregon’s First Lady Mary Oberst has preserved this extraordinary landmark for future generations.
As a gateway to the Pacific Rim, Portland and Oregon have deep historical roots and ties to China and the Far East, to the people of Taiwan and the Mainland, and to the overseas community worldwide.
I am delighted to see this exquisite presentation performed in our community and I welcome you.
Sincerely,
Margaret Carter
